This paper proposes a new set of indicators of patent value that takes explicitly into account the use of the patent by the patent owner. We validate this set of indicators by means of a survey study in which we have asked to 129 patent attorneys and professionals working for a large European multinational electronics company to estimate the value of a sample of 516 patent families. Our results shows that indicators that take into account the characteristics of the company (such as number of citations to the company’s patent) are better predictor of patent value than traditional type of indicators such as number of citations received or renewals.
