The aim of this article is both to improve our understanding of the dynamics of sustainable innovation by using evolutionary theory of innovation and to use sustainable innovations to improve our understanding of the evolutionary innovation theory. The paper starts with a presentation of the challenges to innovation perspective from three perspectives and areas, which had contributed to improve our understanding of innovation and its dynamics by raising new questions and finding new answers. Next we develop a framework of transformative innovation, which we see as a key concept in sustainable innovations. We discuss how this concept is different from traditional ways of framing innovations, and discuss what it is meant by transformative innovations. After that, we discuss we have learnt about the dynamics of transformative innovation from Danish experiences of transformation in areas of energy, food and mobility. By take focusing of these areas it is our hope to that we can develop an understanding of both the dynamic of sustainable innovation and of the concept of innovation is more dynamic and sensitive to the complexity and fluidness of innovations and change.
