Abstract
This paper examines the internal anatomy of regional social capital and develops a role for dealmakers -- key individuals who maintain active, concurrent fiduciary ties to multiple firms and provide regional stewardship. Analysis of data from Capital IQ reveals significant variation in the stock of dealmakers among regions and suggests that the presence of these highly connected individuals is associated with greater entrepreneurial vitality, as measured by the birth of new technology-based firms. Our empirical results suggest that the presence of dealmakers is a better predictor of a successful entrepreneurial economy than either the number of entrepreneurs or investors.
