Abstract

Despite the relevant role of firms as generators of variety in economic evolution, it has been only in the last decades that a distinct body of work explicitly dealing with the firm has emerged within the evolutionary perspective. As a result, the evolutionary approach to the firm is still developing, and further elaboration and systematisation are needed for it to become a fully established theory. Firms as conceptualised within the most recent developments in the evolutionary approach constitute instances of systems which are susceptible of analysis through ACE (Agent-based Computational Economics) modelling. Since methodological advancement and theory generation are among the main objectives of this formal methodology, we argue that ACE can assist in the process of development of the emerging evolutionary theory of the firm. We draw upon the recent advances in the application of ACE to the analysis of organisations, and discuss the possibilities of ACE as a methodological tool for the theoretical elaboration of the existing conceptualisations of the firm within the evolutionary perspective.
